The Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining's convener, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, asserts that the

The government's inability or cooperation in the illegality may be to blame for their failure to adequately confront the galamsey menace.

He argues that it is more indicative of the government's lack of commitment to the fight against the crime because it is unable to take significant action against those who have been identified as actively participating in and facilitating galamsey in the country.

He was specifically referring to the controversy that is currently raging over Akonta Mining Limited's operations in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.
