5 dead, 40 hospitalised after eating Waakye from popular joint at Oyibi

Investigations are being conducted concerning the deaths of five Waakye customers and the hospitalization of forty other customers at Bush Canteen Junction in Oyibi, Greater Accra Region.

On Friday, January 20, 2023, the sad tragedy took place, leaving the locals shocked and terrified at the same time.

The waakye vendor, also known as Yellow Sisi, and a few of her family members who had consumed the meal were taken to the hospital because of severe stomach pains.

A lotto salesman and a pregnant woman are among those who perished after consuming the well-known Waakye.

The event was so serious that the nearest hospital, Valley View Hospital, reportedly had to turn away some patients in order to refer them to other hospitals because it was unable to serve everyone who was taken to the center for treatment.

It is still unknown what caused the poisoning.

The incidence was reported to the Daily Graphic by Dr. Esther Danquah of the Kpone Katamanso District Hospital, who also said that more inquiry was proceeding to elucidate more specifics.

We are unable to provide precise information on the number of people affected or whether it was actually a case of food poisoning until all necessary laboratory tests are finished, she said. "As of right now, some other people are still visiting the hospital," she said.

One of the men's widows described how her husband passed away at St. John's Hospital in Amrahia on January 23 after complaining of stomach pain and diarrhea.

He first complained of feeling sick on Friday, but we assumed it was nothing unusual. Later, when things got worse, we took him to the hospital, but he didn't make it, the grieving widow recalled.

The Yellow Sisi Waakye restaurant has been shut down, and inquiries into the incident have been opened by the Oyibi Police and the Food and Drugs Authority.
