Dani Alves: Former Barcelona defender detained on suspicion of sexual assault

Spain's BARCELONA Dani Alves, a Brazilian soccer player who previously played for Barcelona, was detained on Friday after being accused of sexually abusing a lady in Spain. A court later rejected his request for release.

According to authorities, the alleged attack happened on December 31 at a nightclub in Barcelona.

After responding to a police summons, Alves was taken into custody. After hearing hours of testimony, state prosecutors requested that he be kept without bond, and the judge granted their request. He was then charged with sexual assault.

In Spain, a charge of sexual assault can refer to anything from unwanted and uninvited touching to rape. Police claimed they were unable to provide any information on the case.

Alves refuted the claims in a video sent to the Spanish television station Antena 3 last Friday.

Even though he admitted to going out dancing the night of the alleged assault, he insisted that he did not know the victim and added, "I have never entered the personal space of anyone."

Alves, who is now 39, is one of soccer's most accomplished players, having won major championships for Brazil and a number of top teams, including Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain, throughout his lengthy career.

He is now a player with the Pumas team in Mexico.

Alves has been one of soccer's most endearing characters for more than ten years. He is known for his inventive play on the field, as well as his quick wit and love of fashion off it.

The defender, who played on the team's right wing behind Lionel Messi from 2008 to 2016, was an important component of Barcelona's heyday.

Three times while playing for the Catalan club—which he briefly returned to last season—he won the Champions League. At the age of 38, he also assisted Brazil in capturing two Copa America trophies and an Olympic gold medal.
