Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the member of parliament for the Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, has called for a change to the 1992 Constitution that would decrease the number of constituencies and, consequently, lawmakers in the nation.
According to a citi news report, he claims that in order to relieve burden on the public coffers, the nation's 275 constituencies should be cut to 200.
The member who also serves as the deputy majority leader of parliament stressed that the country's financial problems do not call for the unnecessary election of additional lawmakers to the house of representatives.
"I must admit that setting a cap on the number of MPs we must elect each year is an important consideration.
"It is offensive that a small nation like Ghana, which has numerous budgetary issues, has 275 MPs. We must lower the number of seats in our parliament from 275 to 200, he stated, pointing out that despite its considerable financial might, Australia only has 151 senators and 76 representatives.
On March 15, 2023, he said that Ghana needs an Upper chamber that will be known as the House of Elders while speaking at this year's GIMPA Law Conference.
"I believe Ghana needs an upper house. It should be called the House of Elders, and its major function should be to mitigate the excessive partisanship and existing parliamentary excesses," he continued.
