MTN Ghana reactivates 1.5m SIM cards earlier disconnected

1,504,366 of the 5,422,828 mobile phone subscribers who had been deactivated as of December 1, 2022 for failing to complete the Stage 2 or biometric process have been fully reactivated by MTN Ghana.

On February 12, 2023, this was completed.

The largest mobile service provider claims that it is still dedicated to the nationwide SIM re-registration operation in order to create an accurate customer database and support the development of a safer digital environment in the nation.

As a result, it will keep using resources and collaborating with the regulator to speed up SIM re-registration for all subscribers.

In a conference with telecom carriers on November 17, 2022, the NCA ordered that, as of December 1, 2022, all SIM cards that had successfully finished Stage 1 but had not successfully completed Stage 2 (biometric capture) be disconnected.

In order to do this, MTN Ghana completely followed the directive and disconnected 5,422,828 subscribers on December 1, 2022.

GRA TAX ISSUES

MTN further disclosed that the Ghana Revenue Authority dropped the tax debt assessment, together with any associated penalty and interest costs, on February 3, 2023.

The Ghana Stock Exchange had previously informed investors that MTN owed the government $8.20 billion in total, including penalties and interest costs.

As a result, MTN Ghana gave its shareholders and other stakeholders the reassurance that the company runs responsibly and has a firm commitment to compliance, good corporate governance, and transparency.
It expressed gratitude to the GRA for working with it to get this peaceful and mutually satisfying withdrawal of the evaluation and thanked all parties for their assistance throughout the meetings.
