Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, the Daily Searchlight's editor-in-chief, has filed lawsuits before the Supreme Court contesting John Dramani Mahama's eligibility to run for reelection in 2024.
Mr. Kuranchie is requesting a ruling that Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, when properly and truthfully interpreted, plainly states that the length of a presidential term is four years.
A statement stating, according to a true and accurate interpretation of Sections 66(1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution, the incumbent president must be the one running for reelection.
An affirmation that a former president of Ghana is ineligible to run for office in Ghana based on a true and proper reading of Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution.
Former president John Agyekum Kufuor and Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin have joined the lawsuit.
In accordance with Mr. Kuranchie's request, the court should direct the Speaker of Parliament to use and put into effect Article 68 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.
Additionally, he requests that the court halt Mr. Mahama's efforts to run for president.
He also asks the court to order Mr. Mahama to fully disclose to Parliament the length of his contract as the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) flagbearer.
