Confusion in court as complainant breaks down in tears, pleads on behalf of defendant

On Wednesday, the complainant in a theft case, James Bassey, broke down in tears as he asked for leniency on behalf of the defendant, Puis Savoir, in a heartbreaking scene in the Badagry Chief Magistrates' Court.

In exchange for stealing a pressing iron and N20,000, the dry cleaner received a one-month prison sentence.

Following Savoir's admission of guilt and the prosecution's presentation of the facts of the case, Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya handed down the conviction.

The incident happened on July 6 at around 7:00 p.m. on Church-Gate, Lagos' Yeponnawa Street.

The plaintiff James Bassey was the victim of Savoir's alleged theft of a pressing iron and N20,000, the prosecution claims. The act contravened Section 287 of the Lagos Criminal Law of 2015.

Chief Magistrate Adekomaiya stated the court's aim to be lenient because Savoir was a first-time offender.

As a result, the defendant was given a one-month prison sentence, of which the first seven days were to be spent behind bars and the final three weeks in Morogbo Police Station.

Savoir reported every day to the police station during this time to perform community service.

However, James Bassey, overcome with emotion, sobbed uncontrollably after the sentence was handed down and begged the court to grant the convicted drycleaner a pardon.

My Lord, this convict looks after me constantly; I don't have a wife or kids. He used to help me with all of my housework and give me massages, but his habit of stealing from me is too severe, so I reported him when he started stealing my money and pressing iron. Nobody will help me if you put him in jail right away, and this might result in my demise, he added.
