Yao Wlako, an accused in a robbery in Ho Area 51 in the Volta Region, urinated profusely in the dock during his arraignment before the Ho Circuit Court on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
The urine was so abundant that it filled the dock and poured into the courtroom and adjacent corridor, forcing several individuals to leave the courtroom and passage to avoid the stench.
Wlako was one of two accused who allegedly stormed into the home of a married couple in Ho Area 51 and robbed them of their possessions at gunpoint after tying them up and burning their bodies with a hot pressing iron.
Wlako, 30, stood in the dock alongside his suspected accomplice, Emmanuel Boni, 24.
They were charged jointly with robbery conspiracy, robbery, inflicting unlawful damage, unlawful entering, and causing hurt. Both pled not guilty to all five charges.
Wlako urinated, ruining his jeans and trousers, as their pleas were being heard.
The event occurred at 1.30 a.m. on March 13, this year, according to Chief Inspector Agnes Ahiable, who represented the republic in court presided over by Mr Felix Datsomor.
According to the prosecution, Wlako lived in Accra at Agbogbloshie, while Boni lived in the Volta Region in Peki-Avetile.
According to the prosecutor, the two suspects met in Peki-Avetile on the eve of the crime before traveling to Ho.
She claimed the accused broke into the couple's home while they were sleeping with their baby, and that Wlako was wielding a pistol.
The men, according to the prosecution, cut the nets of the house's windows but realized the windows were fortified, so they used a screwdriver to unlock the security door at the back of the property and gained entry to the kitchen.
They then went into the bedroom, where Wlako forcibly held the man onto the bed.
According to the prosecutor, Wlako grabbed up the pressing iron he had heated earlier in the living room and burned the man's and his wife's arms, shoulders, and back during the attack.
They are also reported to have burned the woman's thigh with the pressing iron.
"The two men then cut the iron cord and used it to tie the man's legs and a sponge to tie the woman's arms from behind." "They dragged the couple into the restroom and locked them inside," Chief Inspector Ahiable explained.
According to the prosecutor, the accused then raided the house and stole a laptop for GH8,000, an iPhone worth GH13,000, a Samsung tablet worth GH6,000, and a Techno phone worth GH200.
"The armed men also helped themselves to a quantity of jewellery worth GH10,000, and one gold watch worth GH7,000, as well as three other watches worth GH1,800, a high-definition video camera worth GH2,500, and GH7,000 in cash," the prosecution stated.
The accused fled with their loot, although Boni left his cell phone behind, according to her.
According to the prosecutor, the accused returned to the premises within 10 minutes to look for the phone but did not find it.
The following morning, the man reported the incident to Area 51 Police and gave over the cellular phone left behind by the accused.
"Wlako was later arrested at his hideout in Agbogbloshie and Boni was picked up at Peki-Avetile following intelligence gathering and based on the details of the cellular phone left behind by the accused persons," the prosecutor told the court.
Meanwhile, the prosecution stated that the accused persons' possessions included an iPhone 13 Pro Max, a Samsung tablet, jewelry, a video camera, and a Techno phone.
Following their arrest, the victims identified Wlako and Boni as the men who robbed them, according to Chief Inspector Ahiable.
They also recognized the retrieved goods as belonging to the accused.
According to the prosecution, Wlako and Boni admitted to robbing the couple during interrogation.
Boni also told the cops that the cell phone left there belonged to him.
The accused were remanded into prison custody and ordered to appear in court on May 3, this year.
