Using the cedi for gift bouquet is illegal - BoG

The use of cedi notes to create bouquets and hampers has been deemed unlawful by Mr. Dominic Owusu, Director of the Currency Department at the Bank of Ghana.

As a result, the central bank official has advised Ghanaians to stop doing this.

Mr. Owusu warned that using the cedi for reasons other than those intended for it could result in legal action in a statement to the media.

"In recent years, I've observed individuals using money to purchase bouquets and, occasionally, to create patterns in baskets and hampers for presentations. In his remarks to the public, he said, "It is against Bank of Ghana policy.

He added that the Bank of Ghana's cedi is legal tender and should only be used as a means of exchange, not for giving or receiving presents.

He went on to say that once money is used for reasons other than those for which it was intended, it becomes defaced.

"Currency Act 64" refers to using coins, which are currently bills, for purposes other than those for which the act was created.

"halt doing such things; they are against policy and you must halt them. Go out and purchase presents if you want to give someone a gift. Don't go out and purchase flowers and carry it out, he advised.

He also refuted reports that the Bank of Ghana had released a 500 cedi coin using this medium.

He claims that the information to that extent that has been making the rounds on social media is untrue.
