Woman, 33, sells baby for Ghs15,670 to offset bank loan

Olaide Adekunle, 33, allegedly sold her 18-month-old baby for N600,000 to pay off a bank loan.

The suspect, who lives in Sango in Ogun State's Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, allegedly fled to Lagos and sold the infant to an unidentified buyer.

The culprit was apprehended by Ogun State Police Command officers after the woman's husband, Nureni Rasaq, filed a report at the Sango divisional headquarters.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state's Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this in a statement on Monday.

According to the PPRO, the husband said that his wife traveled for Lagos on March 15, 2023 with their baby girl, Moridiat Rasaq, but did not return.

According to Oyeyemi, the spouse also alleged that all efforts to find out what happened to the kid were futile because the mother was unable to provide any reasonable account of the infant's location.

"Following receiving the complaint, the DPO Sango division, CSP Dahiru Saleh, directed his investigators to pursue the alleged woman, and she was soon detained," he added.

During questioning, the suspect admitted to selling the baby for N600,000 to someone in Lagos.

"When questioned why she was acting in this manner, she replied that she borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to repay it, the bank agents began pulling her and threatened to deal decisively with her."

"As a result of this, she fled to Lagos and began selling sachet water."

"She met a man while hawking who introduced her to the woman who eventually bought the child in Lagos."

The PPRO, on the other hand, stated that the suspect had been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and probable retrieval of the infant by the acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Babakura Muhammed.
