Ghanaian youth smoke weed, shisha like locomotive engines - Sam George on kidney diseases

Samuel Nartey George, the member of parliament for Ningo Prampram in the Greater Accra Region, has attributed some of the surge in kidney-related disorders in Ghana to what he called the careless lifestyle choices made by young people in the country.

The legislator claims that while some people develop renal ailments due to no fault of their own, the bulk of instances are brought on by poor lifestyle decisions such as carelessly smoking cigarettes, shisha, marijuana, and other hard drugs for the sake of trends.

He mentioned East Legon and other Accra neighborhoods where young people openly show drug usage without considering the potential long-term health effects.

In an interview with Benjamin Akakpo on Joy News TV, Sam George mentioned a few things, including this.

He bemoaned the fact that most young people are ingesting various mixtures marketed as aphrodisiacs, treating it as the greatest thing that has ever happened, all of which end up harming their kidneys and other important organs.

He issued a warning, saying that in order to protect its citizens, it is past time for the nation to critically examine some of these tendencies and outlaw some of these harmful chemicals.

Health experts in Ghana are concerned about the rising number of kidney disease diagnoses, particularly as they pertain to younger adults.

Since the kidney unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital closed months ago, several patients have passed away and the conditions of others have gotten worse. One of the reasons the leading health center closed its renal section was due to a debt of GHC4 million.
